There are 5 recognised subspecies within South West Pacific

They are typically found near sheltered fresh or brackish waters. They are often seen near roadsides, drainage ditches and along the margins of scrub or forested areas.

Pukekos are very abundant and widespread, with high population densities in areas of the North Island and the West Coast of the South Island.

There were an estimated 600,000 pukekos in the 1980's.
