Kingfishers are commonly found in coastal and freshwater habitats throughout New Zealand.

They eat small crabs, tadpoles, freshwater crayfish and small fish, in coastal areas they eat insects, spiders, lizards and mice.

The Kingfisher is one of a species that actaully benefit from deforestation as it increases their habitat at the edge of forests.
